Do you need a passport to go to Scotland? Do I need a passport to fly to Scotland? Do you need a passport to drive to Scotland?
Some people are unsure about whether they need a passport to travel to Scotland. To work out if it’s OK to travel to Scotland without a passport, the main things you need to consider are:
- Where you are travelling from
- Your method of transport – plane, car, train or walking
Are you travelling in the UK only? Do you need a passport to travel from England to Scotland?
If you’re travelling in the UK only then you do not need a passport to go to Scotland if you’re driving, on the train or walking. There aren’t border controls on the road or the train tracks as you cross the border between England and Scotland (just some “Welcome” signs to greet you!). See our guide to travelling to Scotland.
Do I need a passport to fly to Scotland?
Flying from England to Scotland by plane (or other UK internal flights)
If you’re flying from an airport in the UK to an airport in Scotland, it is likely that you will need to carry a form of photographic identification. This may not need to be a passport but you could use your passport as photographic identification. If you want to fly to Scotland without a passport, you may be able to use another form of photographic identification, such as a driving licence. You should check the airline’s website as each airline may accept different forms of identification and some may require a passport.

If you decide to use your passport as your form of photographic ID, you can apply for a new passport or renew an existing passport using your nation’s passport office. In the UK, that’s the UK passport service.
Coming from overseas to visit Scotland?
